There may be many unwritten rules for blogging to start your own Blog. But there are some that are important as the bloggers who don’t comply could get on themselves negative publicity or even worse, that is legal issues. Below are some rules of blogging that needs to be considered after you start your own Blog that will then assist you by protecting from the problems in the blogosphere.

  1. Cite Sources

It mostly happens when you would want to refer to another article or blog post that you would have read within your own blog post. Copying a phrase or a few words without violating copyright laws can be done by remaining in the rules of fair use. But with that you must ascribe the source from where that quote came from. This can be done by citing the original author’s name, with the website or blog name where the specific quote was originally used, having the link to the original source.


  1. Ask for Permission

Citing few words or phrase with attributing the source is acceptable under fair use laws, but it is important to know that the concern of the fair use law regarding the online content is still an ill-defined category with no specific set of rules. So it is better to ask for permission as a precaution from the author to republish their articles phrase or words with proper attribution on your blog.


Permission is also taken for the use of picture or images you wish to use on your blog. Permission is asked from the original article or blog owner or you must ask for permission from the original photographer or designer, to publish their piece of work with proper attribution.



  1. Remember to Play Nice

Being an owner of a blog doesn’t really means that you are free to write and publish anything you want without any repercussions. It is important to remember that the work you publish is out in the world which is seen by millions. Just as reporter’s words or someone’s verbal words can be defamatory or slander so as the words in your blog could be. So you should be very careful and avoid any legal involvement by writing, consider a global audience in mind. Try not to use any offending words or comments. You never know who might just stumble upon your blog and get offended, creating problems for you.


  1. Communicate

The cardinal rule is to communicate. Don’t treat you blog as a vacuum where there is communication is only between you and your computer. Communicate to the audience you have. Talk to your fellow bloggers, reach out to the followers you have, link to other interesting posts and make connections. When you blog, feel like it’s the only way to express your niche, that will attract audience, and the more you communicate the more followers you’ll get.
